The Upper Extremity
There are four segments of the upper extremity
- The shoulder
- Arm
- Forearm
- Hand
The clavicle
- The fracture that is most common in the body is a clavicle fracture beside the finger
- The clavicle has a side that has a lateral end attached to the acromion process of the scapula
- The clavicle has that medial end that attaches to the manubrium in the sternum
Is the clavicle part of the appendicular or axial skeleton?
- It forms the top part of the appendicular skeleton but it articulates (attaches) to the axial skeleton at the sternoclavicular joint
Scapula (aka Shoulder blade)

- The likelihood of a shoulder dislocation is higher than a hip dislocation
- X-ray needs to happen before and after the reduction
